USF won in thrilling fashion over Cincinnati last night in the quarterfinals of the AAC tournament. The game came down to penalty kicks and the Bulls found a way to get it done.
In the first half, the two sides battled to a scoreless draw. The Bearcats had 6 shot attempts compared to just 4 for the Bulls. Kat Elliott made 2 saves. In the 2nd half, the Bulls had run their shot total to 12 compared to 13 for the Bearcats but neither side could not find the back of the net despite several looks.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the teams settled the game on penalty kicks. USF was up 3 to 1 in penalty kicks but the Bearcats netted two straight to force the game into sudden death. Haley Johnson, who was in for Kat Elliott, made the first save in sudden death setting the stage for Leticia Skeete. Skeete stepped up, hit her shot but it was blocked by Cincinnati keeper Kaleigh Piscioneri. However, Piscinoeri’s block deflected the ball off of the post and rolled into the net, giving USF the victory in thrilling fashion.
With the win (USF is 13-3-2), the Bulls will host the top seeded Uconn Huskies on Friday up in Storrs, Connecticut (game begins at 7 PM) in the AAC semifinals.
