Welcome to the #TNSF (The New South Florida) USF recruiting class of 2021 chronicle series. The series will breakdown every single #Stampede21 recruit that signs on the dotted line and officially becomes a part of Head Coach Jeff Scott’s second recruiting class! Let’s welcome in CB Christian Williams (USF Profile), S Matthew Hill (USF Profile), CB Will Jones II (USF Profile), and WDE Jamari Stewart (USF Profile) to the Bulls!
CB Christian Williams – University of Miami
Previously at the University of Miami where he spent two seasons with the ‘Canes, Williams transferred to USF on December 16th. In 2019, Williams appeared in 13 games totaling 5 tackles and 1 PBU on the season. Williams appeared in one game this past season before entering the transfer portal.
Mike’s Take:
As I was doing my research on Williams, there were a countless number of articles that praised Williams for his ability at the corner position as someone that was on the brink of significant playing time with the ‘Canes. After the departures of KJ Sails and Mike Hampton to the NFL Draft, this position needed more experience heading into Spring camp and I fully expect Williams to be someone that will have something to say about the open spots on both sides of the field.
S Matthew Hill – Auburn University
Previously at Auburn University where he spent three seasons with the Tigers, Hill transferred to USF on December 16th. In 2018, Hill had a fumble recovery and recorded 22 yards rushing on the season. As a redshirt freshman, had eight catches on the year. Hill moved to safety this past season where he appeared in three games before entering the transfer portal. Was a special teams contributor for most of his career at Auburn.
Mike’s Take:
Going from one position to another is never easy, but Hill is someone that I can see making that transition for the Bulls this season. With a year of secondary experience under his belt (along with playing on both the offensive and defensive side throughout high school), look for Hill to insert himself into the safety position that has a mix of youth and experience on the backend. Something to note as well… While Hill was in HS, Clemson was recruiting Hill as a safety at the next level. Even with Scott as a Co-OC/WR coach with the Tigers, it’s never too late to look back on players that your staff has recruited before…
CB Will Jones II – Kansas State University
Previously at Kansas State University where he spent two seasons with the Wildcats, Jones II transferred to USF on December 16th. As a true freshman in 2019, Jones II appeared in four games and made one tackle. In 2020, Jones II started in two games and appeared in seven where he racked up 15 tackles, 2 tackles for loss (TFL), one interception, and one blocked punt before entering the transfer portal in November.
Mike’s Take:
Through the first month of the 2020 season, Jones II was ranked #3 in lowest passer rating allowed by CBs at 7.6 according to Pro Football Focus. With Bentlee Sanders transferring to Nevada, in steps Jones II who provides a veteran piece to a young, but talented secondary group. Get ready for some COMPETITION in the secondary this Spring camp!
WDE Jamari Stewart – Mississippi State University
Previously at Mississippi State University where he spent one season with the Bulldogs, Stewart transferred to USF on December 16th after opting out of the 2020 season.
Mike’s Take:
This was a move that made a lot of sense for the Bulls defense as they look to improve on the pass rushing side of the things for the 2021 season. I expect Stewart to come in and be apart of the WDE rotation where we saw multiple guys go in and out throughout the 2020 year. Look to Spring camp for an indication on who might be the early favorites at the position as we get closer to September 2nd against NC State.
