DB James Chenault (Jones – Orlando, FL)
Committed to the Bulls on January 22nd, Chenault is one of six defensive backs to commit to the 2024 class. Via Rivals.com, Chenault received offers from Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Louisville, Ole Miss, Purdue and more during his recruitment.
Run the Tape:
Tracks the ball well in the air who should have no problem coming up with interceptions at the next level. Good technique overall. Will find himself turned towards the ball whether the ball is in the air or not who will not have to overreact to make a play on the receiver/ball. Ball hawk who makes the effort to get a hand on the ball when able. Performs best when put into man coverage where he can lock in on one receiver. Physical corner who enjoys fighting with a receiver at the line of scrimmage and throughout the play.
Mike’s Take:
I can’t say that they make cornerbacks like James Chenault anymore and if they do, they seem like an endangered species in a college football landscape that favors the receiver on pass plays more often than not. Chenault is the epitome of a physical, man to man corner who loves getting receivers off-balance throughout the play. Call him a ball-hawk, call him a nuance for offenses who expect a flag for “excessive contact” every play, call him a play-maker, etc. The Orlando product out of Jones High School will make his mark as a corner for the Bulls at some point down the line and I’m excited to see how he develops at the next level.
