Welcome to our series chronicling the 2024 USF Recruiting Class! This series will breakdown every single recruit that has signed to become a part of Head Coach Alex Golesh’s first full recruiting class. (Having a full year to put a class together.) Help us welcome LB Devon Byrd to the Bulls!
LB Devon Byrd (Cardinal Newman – West Palm Beach, FL)
Committed to the Bulls on November 5th, Byrd was one of four linebackers to commit to the 2024 class. Via Rivals.com, Byrd received offers from Illinois, Florida Atlantic, Bethune-Cookman, Eastern Kentucky and North Carolina A&T during his recruitment.
Run the Tape:
Elite size/speed combo at the position who has room to grow in a college strength and conditioning program. Possesses good length to be effective in coverage. Quick twitch/first step to beat offensive linemen off the snap. More than just a speed rusher being active with his hands at the point of attack. Used predominantly on the line of scrimmage, Byrd flashes the ability to move back and play inside linebacker with further development in his game.
Mike’s Take:
Listen to these stats that Devon racked up his senior year: 66 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 18 sacks. The production speaks for itself on what type of player that the Bulls are getting from Byrd as a converted safety who has now made his home at the linebacker position. The ceiling is high for the West Palm Beach product who will open some eyes in the conference when it’s all said and done. As noted, how he develops will determine what type of enforcer that he will be on this new look Bulls defense. Welcome to the Bulls Devon!
