Previewing the 2024 USF Bulls: LB Edition

The USF 2024 linebackers unit will be one of the most dominant units on the defensive side of the ball for the Bulls. But who will be the starters?

The USF Football 2024 season is right around the corner Bulls fans! Here at SoFloBulls, we are previewing each position and today, we dive into the linebackers. One of the most intricate positions on this Bulls defense is the linebacker position.

This unit has a lot of quality depth and the ability to be a feared position group amongst USF’s opponents in 2024.

ILB1: Mac Harris

Harris has given the Bulls a true leader on the defensive side of the ball. Entering his Senior season, the 6’0″, 240-pound linebacker produced 33 tackles, one forced fumble and an interception in 2023. Going into 2024, Harris is expected to start at one of the inside linebacker spots, and for good reason. His ability to hunt down the ball carrier and explode through defenders for tackles makes him a worthy candidate to be a leader on the defense.

Backup: DJ Gordon IV

Gordon enters the 2024 season looking to improve upon a solid 2023 year in which he had 26 tackles and 3.5 sacks. The 6’1″ Senior from Plant City is a dominant presence in both pass protection and defending against the run. Look for Gordon to see quality playing time backing up Harris, although the position battle for the starting role will be something to watch as the season nears.

ILB2: Jhalyn Shuler

One of the Bulls’ top defensive stars in 2023, Shuler has made a name for himself in Tampa. Last season, the 6’3″ linebacker totaled 45 solo tackles with 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble. Pairing Shuler with Harris and/or Gordon is going to be a nightmare for opposing offenses.

Backup: Jamie Pettway

Another Bulls senior linebacker, Pettway should see a good portion of playing time this season as he will most likely be the backup to Shuler. Just 10 solo tackles, one sack and a forced fumble in 2023, Pettway has the opportunity to produce a more intricate role within the second level of the defense.

OLB: Jason Vaughn

At outside linebacker, look for Vaughn to occupy that position for the majority of the 2024 season. On the Bulls official roster, Vaughn is listed at defensive end, and could still see playing time up front on the line. Nevertheless, the defense will be a dominating factor this year for the Bulls with a 6’5″ linebacker manning the outside portion of the field.
