Bulls Destroy Golden Eagles, 49-24

The USF Bulls stampeded into Hattiesburg, MS to take on the Southern Miss. Golden Eagles. The Bulls won in commanding force, but take a look at went down at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

On September 14, 2024, the South Florida Bulls traveled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to take on the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.

In front of 23,537 fans (allegedly), the Bulls ripped the Golden Eagles limb from limb.

It was a genuine team effort, defeating the Golden Eagles 49-24 which went down as USF’s first win on the road this season.

Offense

The South Florida Offense was scoring from everywhere possible – through the air and on the ground.

Quarterback Byrum Brown completed 19/29 passing attempts for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 6.7 yards / completion.

The Bulls’ run game was unstoppable. Running Back Kelley Joiner carried the ball 10 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns. His longest rush of the day was for 50.

Byrum Brown and Running Back Nay’Quan Wright each ran the ball 15 times. Brown totaled 72 rushing yards with one touchdown, while Wright gathered 105 yards and a touchdown.

Running Back Ta’Ron Keith also recorded a score. Additionally, I’d like to point out that Kicker (yes, I said Kicker!) John Cannon scooted for a 17 yard rush on an amazing fake field goal attempt. He nearly scored!

From a receiving standpoint, Wide Receiver Sean Atkins did what he does best – catch passes. Atkins hauled in five passes for 87 yards.

His longest play on the day was a 35 yard reception from Quarterback Byrum Brown. Atkins moved into 3rd on USF’s All-Time Career Receptions list – he now sits at 134.

Tight End Payten Singletary and Wide Receiver Josh Hardeman each added a receiving touchdown to the score sheet.

Defense

The USF Defense was a force to be reckoned with. Recording three sacks and an interception, they had the Southern Mississippi offense struggling to gain positive yardage.

Defensive Back Kajuan Banks and Cornerback Jarvis Lee each individually recorded a sack. Defensive End D.J. Harris and Defensive Back Jaelen Stokes both had half of a sack. Linebackers Mac Harris and Jamie Pettway both lead the team with five total tackles each.

Defensive End Michael Williams II recorded 1.5 tackles for loss. Hauling in the team’s lone interception was Defensive Tackle Doug Blue-Eli. The 315 pound lineman could not have looked more majestic as he dove to make the catch.

What’s Next?

On Saturday, September 21st, the Bulls will host a nationally ranked ACC foe in the No. 8 Miami Hurricanes at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

It appears that the USF student body will be coming out in force to the game. Once tickets were made available for them to claim, 13,000 students claimed tickets in the first 24 hours and the current total was at 14,535 as of Monday (Sept. 16).

VP Athletics Michael Kelly said, “ We are thrilled to see all the excitement surrounding Saturday’s game against Miami and are grateful for the high demand, particularly with the record level of requests we’ve seen so far from our students.” Raymond James Stadium’s 300 Level will be open as thousands of Bulls fans plan to attend the game against the Hurricanes.

Hope to see everyone there!

Go Bulls!
