“It took a while, perhaps longer than it should have, but Tre Watson (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) finally got his first offer a few weeks back.
A day or so after attending USF’s junior day in February, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker got some good news from the Bulls. The local prospect got his hometown offer.
“It was definitely exciting,” he said. “I had been waiting on that first one for a long time. It was a great feeling, and it makes me feel motivated to earn some more.”
Boston College, Stanford, Rutgers, Duke, Florida State, Indiana, Arizona, Michigan, Michigan State and Memphis are some teams that Watson says he has been in contact with recently.
The next thing on his agenda is figuring out where to take some unofficial visits this summer. Those obviously could depend on his offer situation, too.
“I haven’t decided on any trips yet,” he said. “But I would like to see Rutgers, Boston College, Duke, maybe Stanford depending on what the schedule looks like.”
One thing in Watson’s mind is that he doesn’t need to feel pressured. He’s going to be patient with this process, so don’t expect a commitment from him anytime in the next couple of months.
“It wouldn’t be in the summer,” he said. “I would say later on during my senior season. Probably more around Christmas or New Year’s — that’ll be the time.”
As a teammate of T.J. Harrell, another Division I prospect, the two have spoken about comparing schools and considering attending the same one. That will hinge on what opportunities are still to come, certainly.
But it is an idea they are open to.
“We joke about it sometimes,” Watson said. “Of course, he has more offers than I do, but that is an enticing idea.”
