Grading the Coaching Hires

“Could it be? Is it true? Did the Big East do the best job of all the conferences with its new hires.

I say yes.

Give USF, Temple and Cincinnati A’s.

Check that.

A-pluses.

Cincinnati stunned just about everybody in America with its hire of coaching veteran Tommy Tuberville, pulling a coach away from the Big 12 and into the faltering Big East.

USF made what I think is the best coaching hire in America. Willie Taggart will infuse the program with much needed passion, heart and discipline.

Temple hired another slam-dunk candidate in Matt Rhule, whose years of hard work and determination as an assistant under Al Golden helped get the program headed in the right direction.

No school faltered. No school waffled. They made their choices quickly and decisively, and got who they wanted when they set out to replace their departed coaches. Don’t believe me? Well, ESPN Insider Travis Haney also thinks two of the three Big East schools did a terrific job as well.

Haney ranked the top coaching hires in all of college football. He has Taggart at No. 5 and Tuberville at No. 8 on his Top 15 list. Not too shabby for a conference that has gotten nothing but grief over the past year for where it has gone wrong.

In these three hires, the schools — and in turn the league — look all right.”
