South Florida hits the road at 3-0 after the most complete offensive performance of the Brian Hartline era, with the decisive 59-17 victory over Delaware State in which the Bulls racked up 611 total yards.
Bowling Green enters the matchup 0-3, but will be determined to turn things around, especially for the Homecoming matchup. The Falcons will be eager to secure a significant victory that will propel their season forward and it’s up to the Bulls to be the spoiler.
5 Keys to Victory: USF at Bowling Green
1. Start fast, eliminate the homecoming crowd
Bowling Green often finds itself struggling significantly when the opponent gains the lead. The Falcons lost 20-13 to Tarleton State, 56-7 at Nebraska and 55-7 at Iowa State. Against Iowa State, they were tied 7-7 before giving up 28 unanswered points before halftime. Albeit, two of their first three opponents were from the P-4.
USF should attack early and force Bowling Green to play catchup. The Bulls need to come out fast and decimate any hope early on.
2. Keep the explosive offense cookin’
USF finally showed the ceiling is much higher for Tim Beck and this offense against Delaware State in the second half, following another slow start reminiscent of FIU and Army.
Michael Van Buren threw for 300 yards, D.J. Crowther rushed for 101, Joshua Porter added 106 receiving yards, and the Bulls finished with 611 yards of total offense. 59 has a nice ring to it.
The Bulls will be on the right track if the wide receivers eliminate the unforced drops that have plagued them all season.
Bowling Green has surrendered 111 points over the last two games, so this is another opportunity for USF to stretch the field and create explosive plays instead of becoming overly conservative against a hungry team on the road.
3. Make Bowling Green’s quarterback uncomfortable
Bowling Green’s offense has only mustered 27 total points through three games, and quarterback Jay Kastantin was held to just 97 passing yards against Iowa State. The Falcons did hit one explosive play, via a 59-yard touchdown to Winn Sharp, which illustrates why the USF secondary cannot completely relax.
The big question is whether USF’s pass defense is ready to take a step forward. Defending the air attack has been a consistent trouble spot for Aldridge & Co. through the early part of 2026, and this matchup presents an opportunity for the secondary to show marked improvement.
USF should make Bowling Green work for every yard through the air, keep everything in front of the defense, and eliminate explosive plays downfield.
4. Dominate the line of scrimmage and bottle up the run
Bowling Green’s leading rusher, Ke’Marion Baldwin, managed just 38 rushing yards against Iowa State. The Bulls have an opportunity to dictate the game defensively by shutting down the rushing attack and forcing the Falcons into obvious passing situations.
The Bulls should make Bowling Green earn everything through the air and completely asphyxiate the ground game.
Again, it’s time for the USF secondary to make noticeable strides.
5. Don’t fall victim to the road game trap
It may not seem like it, but USF has been remarkably efficient through three games. The Bulls third down conversion rate is 50%, while converting all 12 redzone trips into points and only committing 11 penalties all season.
That matters on the road.
Bowling Green may be 0-3, but desperation and a rowdy Homecoming road crowd can make a game uncomfortable if USF loses focus.
USF must start fast from possession one, create explosive plays, pressure the QB, dominate the line of scrimmage, and play four quarters of clean ball to avoid a trap game meltdown.
The matchup Saturday night in Ohio is about maintaining momentum. The Bulls have already shown they can win a defensive battle against FIU, survive a road conference thriller at Army and overwhelm Delaware State offensively in the second half.
Now the Bulls need to show out for four quarters on the road, handle an opponent they should beat and continue building toward the heart of conference play.
