Two former NFL wide receivers met on opposite sidelines on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, as USF’s Brian Hartline and Delaware State’s DeSean Jackson faced off at Raymond James Stadium.
With both coaches bringing years of NFL experience as playmakers, the matchup carried an intriguing offensive storyline. By the final whistle, Hartline’s Bulls had turned that storyline into a dominant 59-17 victory, improving to 3-0 on the season.
Offense
The South Florida Bulls put together an impressive offensive performance in their victory over Delaware State, using a combination of explosive rushing plays and efficient passing to control the game. The Bulls finished with 611 total yards, demonstrating the ability to move the ball reliably and capitalize on scoring opportunities. Although the Hornets kept the game competitive early, the Bulls’ offense found another gear in the second half.
The rushing attack was led by running back D.J. Crowther, who finished with 101 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries.
Crowther’s dynamic playmaking gave the Bulls a reliable way to generate big plays, with his touchdown runs helping USF extend their lead. The team’s success on the ground also opened opportunities for the passing game.
Quarterback Michael Van Buren delivered a strong performance, completing 23 of 32 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown. He delivered the ball effectively, while wide receiver Joshua Porter led the Bulls in receiving with 106 yards.
The combination of Van Buren’s passing and Crowther’s rushing production allowed USF to maintain offensive pressure throughout the game.
South Florida’s offense was particularly effective after halftime, scoring frequently while Delaware State struggled to respond. The Bulls’ ability to sustain drives late in the game helped turn a competitive first half into a decisive victory.
Defense
USF’s defense faced an early test against Delaware State, which showed its ability to create big plays during the first half. The Hornets scored 17 points before halftime, including a 90-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ui Ale to Nathan Stewart. The Bulls struggled with missed tackles and a few blown coverages, allowing Delaware State to capitalize on mistakes and keep the game competitive. Despite those early issues, the Bulls managed to maintain the lead and entered halftime ahead 28-17.
The Bulls cleaned up the mistakes in the second half, tackling more effectively and limiting Delaware State’s opportunities for big plays. The adjustments helped USF shut out the Hornets the entire second half, allowing the offense to continue building the lead. The improved defensive discipline played a crucial role in turning a tight game in a 59-17 South Florida victory.
South Florida’s defense also contributed by creating pressure and forcing a turnover during the game. Linebacker Marshon Oxley sacked the Hornets’ quarterback Ui Ale, and defensive tackle Ryan Jenkins came up with the recovery.
The Bulls’ ability to disrupt Delaware State’s offensive rhythm became increasingly important as the game progressed, especially after the Hornets showed some early success through the air.
Overall, the second-half defensive effort was a major part of USF’s convincing victory. Holding the Delaware State Hornets scoreless after halftime demonstrated the Bulls’ ability to respond to a challenging opening half and finish the game with control on both sides of the ball. The performance helped the Bulls improve to 3-0 and continue their strong start to the season.
