USF’s 2013 APR Scores Continue to Soar ǀ by Matthew Manuri ǀ SoFloBulls.com ǀ TAMPA – The University of South Florida continued to show progress in the NCAA’s most recent edition of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) report released on Tuesday, highlighted by three programs earning special recognition and nine teams posting perfect annual scores of 1,000. In addition, the football program produced the best four-year improvement by a BCS school and men’s basketball had the fourth-best, four-year jump out of the power six conferences. The 2013 APR report consists of multi-year data from 2008-09 through 2011-12.

“We’ve been extremely happy with the progress we’ve made in the APR over the last few years and that success has continued in the most recent report,” said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Doug Woolard. “Our coaches and student-services department have continued to stress the importance of being strong academically and our student-athletes have done a tremendous job committing themselves to academic excellence, which has produced these stellar results.”

The football program improved its multi-year score by seven points to 970 in the 2013 report, which is tied for 16th in the BCS and ranks second among BIG EAST schools. USF’s four-year jump of 61 points is the best of any BCS school by 21 points while it also has the best three-year improvement out of the BCS. Overall, the Bulls’ score has climbed from 909 in 2007-08 to 970 in 2011-12.

The men’s basketball program has also continued its positive trend. In 2010, the program produced a five-point jump from the previous year, which was the fifth-best improvement out of the six major conferences, to 915. In 2011, the men’s basketball program improved another 22 points, the 10th-largest increase, to 937. The program added another 11 points to its total in 2012, finishing at 948. In the 2013 report, the Bulls jumped five points to 953, making their 75-point jump over the last four years the fourth-largest gain in the six major conferences and is tops in the BIG EAST.

The athletic department is led by softball, women’s and men’s tennis, which received special recognition last week for achieving a perfect multi-year rate of 1,000. The women’s soccer program continued its success, posting a multi-year score of 981, up 14 points from the 2012 report. The golf program had the biggest jump on the men’s side in its multi-year scores, gaining 19 points for a score of 983.
